The Airport

Welcome to the OLES Airport!   Our airport may be small, but it certainly has given our preschoolers a great runway for learning new vocabulary.  Each day, the preschoolers have the opportunity to actively play in the airport so that they can listen to and practice their new transportation words.

In fact, the preschoolers have become experts at getting ready for a trip.  They have learned how to pack their suitcases, pull their heavy luggage through the airport, buy themselves a ticket for departure at the ticket counter and carry their luggage to the security station.  Some of them have even role played as a security officer who monitors the x-ray machine at the security station.  Others, are excellent passengers who wait by the gate & then board their flight for fun destinations.

Each morning around 8:45 a.m. our jet airplane takes off from the ground & flies to a different winter destination...somewhere around the world.  The preschoolers are having a blast with this unit & have all taken turns role playing the different workers that you would find at an airport.  We have highly trained pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, security officers and ticket counter workers.

In the end, the passengers have visited some fabulous winter destinations.  They often shovel snow & feed the arctic animals while they are there.  Some take pictures of the animals for magazines like National Geographic for Kids.  But, in either case, their love for learning language is taking off to new heights!

The Bakery is Closed!

Our holiday baking, theme center is now closed.   However, we had a lot of fun learning our new vocabulary words while playing in it.  Over the course of the month, we made cookie dough, we rolled it out so that we could make cut-out cookies and even baked many batches of gingerbread cookies.  (And we did these with both real and pretend dough!)

The preschoolers even boxed up their cookies & sent them to friends and family members.   Of course, they had to dress up like mailmen & deliver the cookies as well.  Then, some days, we sold the cookies that we made to our friends.  The bakers were even nice enough to bag them up so that we could take them home.  The language in this unit was so fun we "ate" it up all month!

We even used play dough that smelled like gingerbread to make ornaments for our family members. Then we cut out our letters and many other cool shapes.  The flour sensory table was the perfect place to practice measuring, scooping and pouring our ingredients.  It was messy, but worth it!

But, our favorite thing each day was to find the gingerbread man.  He kept hiding all around the room.  One day, he even got loose in the school and we had to track him down.

We'll miss all of the fun in the bakery, but we can't wait to see what's coming up next month.

Mad Scientist Lab comes to Preschool!

The Mad Scientist Lab came to our Preschool class!  It was so much fun.  First, we found out that you can mix the primary colors together to make the different colors of the rainbow.  Then, we watched the professionals mix liquids into different colors.  Last was our favorite part, when we were able to mix our very own primary colors in a ziplock bag.  We even turned our color mixing experiment into a beautiful sun catcher to hang on our window at home.  It was a blast!
