Measuring Success!

We have had so much fun measuring the objects in our classroom.  In math, we have used thermometers to measure temperature, clocks to measure time, balancing scales to compare the weight of objects and lastly, rulers, yardsticks & tape measures to measure the length and height of objects.

After learning about standardized measuring tools, we began to measure objects with nonstandard units.  The kindergarteners found out that a person can use different tools to measure the same things...however, the results might not always be the same. Be sure to ask your child which nonstandard units he/she used to find the length and height of items at school.  Then try to measure more things at home.  You might be surprised to see that they are "measuring up" to big kid standards!
(e.g. pennies, paper clips, centimeter cubes, unifix cubes or crayons)
