In December, we began to learn all of the action words that take place in the kitchen/bakery. We also read a variety of books about baking, too. One of our favorite books was, If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff. After listening to the story, the preschoolers helped me to make blueberry muffin batter in class. I had a very captive audience!
First, we poured the muffin mix, water and oil into the bowl. Then, we cracked the eggs. After stirring & mixing the batter, we added the blueberries and then scooped the batter into the muffin pan. It was exciting to see how much language the preschoolers had already learned about baking by playing in our bakery theme center. They easily used this newly learned vocabulary when talking about our muffin making experience.
However, my favorite part of the experience was watching their facial expressions as they completed each step in the process. In the end, we decided to eat some blueberry muffins that had already been baked so that we could also talk about how they tasted. YUM!
