First week of school - Artwork

Fine motor skills can be challenging for young children to learn.  We are working on refining these skills every day, in different ways.  Some of the ways that we work on fine motor skills are by having the children participate in art projects.  These art projects focus on the literacy activities or stories that we have read in class as well as ones that correlate to our monthly theme.  In our class, we also use art time as a purposeful time to use language and communication skills.

I don't know about you, but I love looking at children's artwork!  In fact, I always try to display as much child art in our classroom (& out in the hallway) as possible.  Displaying a child's artwork is important because it shows them that they are valued.  It shows them that they are able to convey information to others in a visual manner.

At this age, the process of art is much more important than the actual product.  But, if you look closely, a child's artwork can also tell you a lot about what he or she knows about life, as well as what fine motor skills he or she is refining.
